Upinzani dhidi ya Biashara ya Arabu ya Utumwa 🕊️👥

Karne ya 19 ilikuwa wakati wa migongano mingi kuhusu biashara ya utumwa katika Afrika Mashariki. Moja ya migongano mikubwa ilikuwa upinzani dhidi ya biashara ya Arabu ya utumwa. Wafanyabiashara wa Kiarabu walikuwa wakichukua watumwa kutoka Afrika Mashariki na kuwauza katika masoko ya utumwa huko Mashariki ya Kati. Lakini japo biashara hii ilikuwa imekita mizizi kwa miaka mingi, kulikuwa na watu ambao waliamua kupigania uhuru na kumaliza biashara hii ya kikatili.

Mmoja wa mashujaa wa upinzani huu alikuwa Mzee Jumbe, ambaye alikuwa kiongozi wa kijiji cha Pemba. Mzee Jumbe alitambua madhara ya biashara ya utumwa kwa jamii yake na aliamua kuchukua hatua. Aliwahamasisha wanakijiji wake kuungana na kupinga kwa nguvu zote biashara hii ya kikatili. Aliwaambia wanakijiji kuwa watumwa ni binadamu kama wao na wanastahili kuishi kwa uhuru.

Tarehe 15 Julai 1869, Mzee Jumbe aliongoza maandamano makubwa dhidi ya biashara ya utumwa. Wanakijiji waliungana na kuimba nyimbo za uhuru na kubeba mabango yaliyokuwa na ujumbe wa kupinga utumwa. Walitembea kwa umoja hadi pwani na kuwakabili wafanyabiashara wa Kiarabu. Walikataa kuwapa watumwa wao na kuwataka waondoke mara moja. Mzee Jumbe aliwahimiza wanakijiji kuwa na imani na kusimama imara katika kupinga utumwa.

Hata hivyo, upinzani dhidi ya biashara hii ya utumwa haukuishia Pemba tu. Viongozi wengine kama vile Mzee Khamis wa Zanzibar na Mzee Rashidi wa Lamu pia walichukua hatua za kupinga biashara ya watumwa. Walitoa hotuba za kuhamasisha jamii zao kuungana na kusimama kidete dhidi ya biashara hii. Mzee Khamis alisema, "Utumwa ni uhalifu dhidi ya ubinadamu, na tunapaswa kuwa sauti ya wale wanaoteswa."

Mnamo tarehe 30 Novemba 1873, viongozi hawa watatu walikutana katika mkutano huko Mombasa. Walikubaliana kuunda umoja wa kupinga biashara ya utumwa. Umoja huo ulijulikana kama "Jumuiya ya Upinzani dhidi ya Biashara ya Arabu ya Utumwa." Walianzisha kampeni za kuhamasisha jamii, kutoa elimu juu ya madhara ya utumwa, na kufanya maandamano na migomo dhidi ya wafanyabiashara wa utumwa.

Kupitia jitihada zao, umoja huu ulifanikiwa kuhamasisha wananchi wengi kuacha kununua watumwa na kuunga mkono uhuru. Walishirikiana na viongozi wa Kiafrika kama vile Mzee Kimweri wa Tanganyika na Mzee Nyerere wa Tanzania. Pamoja, walifanikiwa kusimamisha biashara hii ya kikatili na kuweka misingi ya jamii za Kiafrika kujitegemea bila utumwa.

Umoja wa Upinzani dhidi ya Biashara ya Arabu ya Utumwa ulikuwa mwanzo wa mwisho wa biashara hii ya utumwa katika Afrika Mashariki.
